Cinematography analysis --- 3 idiots (2009, Rajkumar Hirani)

3 idiot was a Indian film directed by Rajkumar Hirani in 2009. It uses lots of cinematography device in the film to convey themes and narrative. As the total length of the film are long, i will choose several scene to analyse the cinematography device that the director use to film this movie.

Starting of the film

(00'05"05 --- 00'11"25)

00'08"31 ---- It uses aerial shot on the helicopter to film the car driving on the road. The camera distance chose long shot and extreme long shot with wide angle to bring the nature scenery to the audience. Filming on the helicopter can have more freedom.

00'08"49 ---- In this scene it use steady cam as the camera work, it puts a camera in front of the car to show and introduce the character to the audience, also to tell the audience that those characters start their journey to find their best friend Phunsukh Wangdu. The camera distance chose medium close up to film the actors inside the car.

00'08"55 ---- the camera movement use panning in this scene where move horizontally from the left to the right to show the car movement.

00'09"02 ---- canted angel used in this scene to show the shapes of the hills. This scene are also film on the helicopter by aerial shot.

00'09"48 , 00'10"01---- the camera level used in this scene was bird eye. The camera angle used are overhead view to show the car movement on the hilly roads.

00'10"51 ---- this scene has a close up shot to shot the emotion of one main character Farhan.

 

00'11"14, 00'11"20 ---- This scene uses selective focus to separate the object from the background. Worms eye camera level used in this scene to capture the eyesight of Farhan when he was a baby.




Introducing the headmaster of ICE --"Virus "

00'18"24 ---- Use panning to show the characteristics of the headmaster that he cannot bear anyone getting ahead from him.

00'18"35 , 00'18"41---- use extreme close up shot to show the appearance of the headmaster. He wear shirts with velcro and tie with a hook.

00'18"48 ---- selective focus is used i this scene to show the clock, by telling the narrative that the headmaster need a nap in everyday 2p.m . His valet also appear in this scene to help him shaving and nail- cutting.

00'19"15 ---- A medium close up shot, show the faces of the headmaster by telling the audience the personalities of him.

00'19"18 ---- Shows the students reaction to the headmaster by medium close up shot. Which telling the audience that the student also afraid of the headmaster.


Mr.Lobo suicide

00'35"22 ---- it uses bird eye level to show the overhead view of the students, this scene first wants to show the main character Wangdu wants to show the finished invention to Lobo so he fly the invention to his room. Many students are surrounded in this scene to share the joy of the finished invention.

00'35"28 ---- the invention shows Lobo commit suicide in his room, the camera use "slow motion" to film this scene to lengthens the duration of the action. This shows the audience the contrast the scene from joy to become sad.


Raju's Home

00'44"37 ---- this part the scene use Black and White effect to film , showing the audience that Raju's family are poor and their family has a unfortune life's.



Ranchoddas Shamaldas Chanchad dad's passed away

1'32"06 ---- this scene use a lot of short take to show the intense scene. Where Raju and Farhan wants to know the address of their friend Wangdu.
