Mise en scene --------Metropolis (1926)

The setting of the film was in a metro city. There is a factory start in the opening of the film which all the worker start to work at the same time everyday. The workers walk in the same speed with the same gesture, like a machine... there eye-sight are focusing downward.

These makes me think of the exploitation of workers in the modern world, such as China the workers who work in "Foxconn " were exploit by the employers and the have mentally imbalance, some of them even suicide because of the over workload. Workers place in the setting was big, most scene are showing the audience the life's of the factory worker.They are under control by the upper class, some scene suggest there life is not important, when there is accident happen, the new worker will replace the old worker immediately.

The people in the second location is the athlete, they are having a competition in the stadium . The contrast of the first and the second location 

The main protagonist is Freder and Maria ,they appear in the scene most of the time. Freder is born in the upper class while Maria born in the Lower class. Freder wear  formal clothes and Maria wear those work clothes .This makes the contrast between them. Freder represent the upper class and Maria is represent the working class in the film.

Establish the narrative

Freder the upper class experienced the working class job while he visit the factory and he know that from the upper class eye , life of the working class is not important. The narrative will develop by Freder may try to go negotiate with the upper class to find a way helping the working class.

Development 

The machine become an evil face monster and the workers become the meals of the machine, this scene happening because the film want to tell the audience that there is  workers sacrifice when they working, it personified the machine like a evil monster. The image change back is because the film wants to personify the machine to present the scene. It says that life in the metropolis is difficult to the working class, and there is many risk to them when they works. I think this helps the scene to bring the remarkable impression to the audience.

How Fritz apply mise en scene to the film?

Fritz Lang use different devices of mise en scene to develop the the character, themes an narratives. He use costume to define the upper and the working class in the film. In the beginning, he use factory, skyscraper...etc as the background to show the theme to the audience.The skyscraper is mean the future city in the world.  He set the same movement and action of the workers  to show the bored life and how hard they work everyday.
